A part of my training down here on Mallorca of course is the swimming training in the sea, with wetsuit. It is important to get into the water with the wetsuit to get use to the way of swimming in neopren. And I can tell you that the neopren down here is definitely still needed when jumping in
On Mallorca the weather the last 2 months has been quite sunny and pleasant, meaning that the water temperature as well has got an ok level. Except the last 2 days, it has been a bit cool and rainy, meaning that the water in the sea is most probably 16 degrees, “mas menos”. For me less than 20 adegrees, even in neopren, is pretty cold… not for 5-10 minutes, but for more than 30 min…!
This morning was cool… windy…but I did what I had to; 30 min with my wetsuit in the sea!!! Even there was wind, did not matter as the wind came offshore, so it was pretty flat, but pretty chilly But I am happy to have done it, from now on the water can only get warmer
So how to prepare to be able to swim at least 30 min in the water under 18 degrees?
– use neopren – compulsory in case you dont want frostbites
– use 2 swimcaps, remember a bright colour
– have a speedsuit under your wetsuit; this helps in the buoyancy and keeps you a bit warmer
– get fast in to the water
– swim fast!!!!
– run fast inside and take a hot shower!
and then if you go for a longer svim, there is the neoprensocks for the feet and neoprenhat.
alternative you eat a lot of chips and chocolate during the winter, and get fat…….works for the seal´s
See you in the waters of Mallorca!
