It is exactly the time of the year in Scandinavia, when the weather slowly is getting a bit warmer, sun is coming through the thick grey clouds and even warming a bit. But don’t let it cheat you, it is not so warm yet, keep enough clothes on when you do your training outside, it is still chilly and humid out there.
What more to watch out in early spring training:
– in the morning it is still almost freezing, so remember to take on your hat and gloves, and remember also your energy intake before going for your early morning training session outside. If you head for a long run/bikeride, have a small breakfast number 1 like toast+banan, yoghurt+fruits/berries etc. Your carbohydrate level is totally down in the bottom in the morning, so you need a bit gasoline for your engine to start the training. If you start with the low glucose amounts in your body, you will not get the same out of your training, as with the full glucose tanks And if you are totally down with your energy, and it is a bit chilly outside, and you are sweating, and slowly getting cold while training, it is the most obvious moment for all the small bacterias to jump into your body… and there you are… getting a cold.
So remember to get som sugar before your training and while you are training, here some good choices:
– ATTENTION when you ride on your bike, and it is cold, here is a tuff thing.
If it is cold and dry air, you tend to sweat very little, and then you tend to drink very little, because after 20 min ride the waterbottle is full of cold water, that you dont want in your stomack, and before you know it, you legs start to feel like wood, stiff and telling you to bike home.
Here is the problem:
The air that you take into your lungs, needs to be over 90% humidity. When you inhale cold dry air, that has 50% humidity, your body fixes this during the short time the air travels in your throat, and it becomes humid, that means that every breath you take your body puts a lot of water into the air that comes inside. So your body needs some water/liquid during the training. Else you really risk to have nothing out of your training, as your legs start to feel heavy early during the bike because of the lack of water.
Go and buy a Camel thermo bottle for your “cold rides”, and put some boiling water in them. It keeps the water temperature nice warm quite a long time. And remember to drink it!
You will have a good ride instead of getting this dry feeling in your throat and risk to get sick as you are out of water to flush your energy down.
Stay cool… the summer is here soon
